Damper Action
A fully modern damper action manufactured with advanced high performance materials.
Flange Rails
WNG Damper Flange Rails are unusually strong. Made of heavy gauge aluminum, all WNG Damper Flange Rails are brushed and anodized black for appearance.
Our strongest rail (left): For pianos with sufficient room in the damper cavity, this rail is the best choice if you wish to use damper assist springs. Because of it's strength, attachment to the belly rail is required only at the ends.
Our thinnest rail (right): For pianos with limited room for the damper action. Requires 3 mounting points instead of 2. This rail can be used with spring flanges if there is sufficient room behind the rail.
Sustain Pickup Tray
WNG Sustain Pickup Trays are extruded from heavy gauge aluminum.
Material and shape combine to produce a sustain pickup tray that is quite strong in relation to wood and resistant to changes in humidity. We are confident that, over time, this tray will resist the tendency to sag typical of wood.
For appearance, the tray has been brushed and decoratively anodized black.
Under Lever Mounting Flanges
WNG supplies two different flanges to mount the Under Levers on the damper flange rails. Both mount the under levers in exactly the same way.
The Spring Mounting Flange allows the use of an adjustable damper assist spring but requires more space in the damper cavity.
The Standard Mounting Flange is used when there is less space in the damper cavity or there is no need for damper assist springs.
Spoon Length
WNG provides a bendable spoon for pickup to the key. Because situations vary there are three spoon lengths from which to choose.
When inserted into the under lever, three key pickup locations are available.
The Under Lever Top Flange
WNG provides two different top flanges:
The American Steinway type top flange features the sostenuto tab located correctly for sostenuto systems where the rod is mounted on the action frame.
The WNG Classic top flange features the sostenuto tab located 7mm lower than the Steinway type. The lower tab is advantageous because there will be more clearance between the sostenuto rod and the backcheck.
Tall Under Lever Top Flange (left): With the sostenuto tab at the right height for actions with the sostenuto rod mounted on the action. Recommended for American Steinway.
Short Under Lever Top Flange (right): With the sostenuto tab at the right height for backcheck clearance. Recommended for everything other than American Steinway.
Hard Bushings
Cloth bushings have problems:
- - Cloth bushings are unstable in a changing humidity environment
- - As cloth bushings change, center pin torque changes
- - As pin torque changes so does the touch of the piano
In comparison, hard bushings are quite advantageous:
- - Hard bushings are dimensionally stable as humidity changes
- - When exposed to changing humidity, pin torque change is negligible
- - The change in the touch of a piano is negligible
Test Results: After 18 million blows, pin torque exhibited virtually no change. In extreme environments, from 10% to 90% Relative Humidity, pin torque was stable.

WNG damper under levers have a number of useful features.
Custom Damper Action (Assembled)
What Options Should I Choose? If you have any questions regarding what options to order with or how to order your damper action, please download the Custom Back Action Process instructions. You can specify a custom damper action by following these steps: 1) If you want WNG to supply damper heads and wires you will need to: - Establish the number of dampers in the piano. - Establish the number of bass dampers. 2) Determine which flange rail to use. 3) Determine which under lever combination of - Mounting flange (If using the Spring Flange how many notes with assist springs.) - Top flange height - Spoon Length - Leading pattern 4) Determine whether or not you wish WNG to supply a sostenuto rod installation kit. Please note that this costs an additional $75.00.
Can you drill and tap aluminium rails? Drilling and tapping aluminium isn't difficult, but it is different than wood. You'll need aluminium tapping fluid, a 3.3 drill bit, and a M4.7 thread tap before you can start drilling. Please note that WNG does not include these materials with its damper actions. However, you don't have access to or can't find them, WNG offers them in a kit or you can buy them individually via the links below.
- 1. Aluminum Tapping Fluid
- 2. 3.3 Drill Bit
- 3. M4.7mm Thread Tap
- 4. Damper hole tapping kit (includes all of the above)
Do You Need A Scale Stick? To complete your order of an Assembled Custom Damper Action, you will need to send WNG a completed Scale Stick. For information on how to order a Scale Stick Kit and instructions on how to use it, please visit our Scale Stick page.
