Center Pins
Wessell, Nickel & Gross center pins are made of the finest "German Silver" center pin wire.
The name "German Silver" is a bit of a misnomer in that this particular wire has zero silver content and is not necessarily made in Germany.
In fact, "German Silver" refers to an alloy of brass and nickel that is made the world over. One of the interesting characteristics of this alloy is that it works extremely well for center pins.
Many times we have been asked, "Why do you not use a plated center pin?" Indeed, early in our process of testing we encountered very nice looking, by all appearances very smooth, plated center pins. Initial inspection suggested the friction should be lower than the traditional "German Silver" center pins. In our testing the fatal flaw soon emerged.
When the bushed center is exercised, heat builds up. The plating, fairly quickly, comes off the center pin wire leaving abrasive particles of metal embedded in the cloth bushing. It does not take long for the center to seize.
When this happens, the bushing must be replaced. Because particles of metal are embedded into the bushing cloth, replacing the center pin is not sufficient to correct the problem.
In the case of "German Silver" center pins, there is no plating to detach from the pin. Furthermore, the nickel content in the alloy acts as a lubricant reducing friction between the center pin and the bushing. In fact, there will be less friction between the cloth and the center pin with "German Silver" than with the plated pins.
After extensive testing, we realized that "German Silver" is without a doubt the best material for a center pin. It is for this reason that WNG center pins are made from "German Silver". All pins are sold in by the ounce (28.35 g).
